Why I Love Painting Renaissance Dog Portraits: A Personal Insight by Sam Banks

The Craft Behind Renaissance Dog Portraits: A Personal Insight by Sam Banks

“As an artist specialising in Renaissance dog portraits, I’ve discovered that nothing compares to the joy of immortalising our beloved pets with the grandeur of the Renaissance era. My passion for animals and my love for classic portraiture have merged into a unique form of art that captures the essence of our modern-day companions, giving them the regal treatment they deserve”.

Why Renaissance Dog Portraits?

The Renaissance period was one of artistic innovation, marked by the realism and grandiosity of portraiture. I take inspiration from the works of greats like Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael, and apply these classical techniques to my paintings of dogs. Every Renaissance dog portrait I create is about celebrating your pet as a noble figure, turning their personality into a visual story of royalty.

Whether you want your dog dressed as a Renaissance noble, a gallant knight, or a queen, my mission is to ensure that each portrait is as unique as your pet. You can discover more about the process and see our dog portfolio and dogs in uniform paintings here.

Giving your dog’s portrait a sense of history

Renaissance portraiture, spanning from the 14th to the 17th century, transformed art with its focus on realism, human emotion, and a newfound attention to light and shadow. Artists during this time portrayed subjects with elegance, often commissioned by royalty to display their power and grace. In my Renaissance dog portraits, I aim to replicate this same sense of prestige and history, honouring dogs with the same level of detail and craftsmanship.

The Detailed Process of Creating your Pet’s Portrait

When I start a new commission, the first step is to learn about your dog’s  personality. Is your dog shy or reserved or do they have a more playful and mischievous demeanour? I incorporate these characteristics into each painting. After discussing ideas with the owner, I work on a preliminary sketch. I use oil paints on premium canvas, layering colours to create depth, and employing  different techniques to make the subject truly stand out. Each portrait takes between 3 to 4 weeks to complete, ensuring every detail is perfect.

Materials and Techniques Used on Your Renaissance Dog Painting

I use traditional oil paints, known for their richness and longevity, ensuring that each Renaissance dog painting retains its vibrancy for years. By applying classical techniques such as light and shadow play and detailed brushwork, I bring each pet to life in a way that is both timeless and personal. Every stroke is designed to enhance the dog’s fur, attire, and posture, turning the portrait into a masterpiece.

Why Commission a Renaissance Dog Portrait?

Pet owners commission Renaissance dog portraits not just as artwork but as lasting tributes to their beloved pets. These portraits are ideal for creating a conversation piece in any home, and many of my clients choose to immortalise their pets in this unique style as a way to celebrate their character. Whether you’re looking for a regal heirloom, a special gift, or simply a stunning artwork for your home, these portraits provide a timeless way to honour your pet.

Client Testimonials and Case Studies

“Great Work” Dimitri, Barcelona

I’ve had the privilege of working with many wonderful clients, each with a unique vision for their pet’s portrait. One memorable commission was for Max, a spirited golden retriever whose owner wanted to capture his lively character while portraying him as the Count of Monte Cristo. After discussing ideas, we decided on a classic yet understated costume that highlighted his noble stature without being overly elaborate. The finished portrait beautifully balanced Max’s playful nature with the dignified charm of a count.

Behind-the-Scenes Look at Sam’s Studio

My studio is a peaceful space, designed to encourage creativity. Every painting starts with careful consideration of the pet’s posture, attire, and expression. I work with natural light, creating an atmosphere that allows me to focus on fine details, such as the texture of the fur or the intricacy of a pet’s costume. When painting, I often reflect on the techniques used by Renaissance masters, blending them with my modern understanding of pet portraiture.
